In the early 60’s I became interested in Native art while living with my grandparents in Neah Bay. My grandfather Roger Colfax was a kind man and seen of my interest and continued to supplied the books that has inspired me continue in the arts. It wasn’t until later on, after he seen I was copying designs from the books that I learned about creating my own style of design.
He’s explanation in the copying of another person’s work was the beginning of my understanding of a person’s power or “Tamanous”.
As I was taught by Grandpa, Tamanous is a power that lives inside each one of us. And as we grow and become a young adult the power grows with us. As I’ve journeyed through life, I have come to realize I have my power, and the power to create new works for people to see.
